A community landcare project at a gateway to the future Puente Hills Regional Park.

Our Plot.

This Test Plot is stewarded by the Puente Hills Youth@Work program–a rotating cohort of high school students from the San Gabriel Valley engaged in design discovery and community outreach. In February 2025, the fifth cohort of the Puente Hills Youth@Work program planted nearly 350 California native and climate-adaptive plants with the help of over 80 community members. As the plot continues to grow, the upcoming cohorts will monitor the plants’ success, expand the network of stewardship partners, and cultivate further opportunities for community connection.

The project is dedicated to building a sustainable, community-driven model of landcare for the future Puente Hills Regional Park. Through collaboration, education, and hands-on experience, we envision a thriving landscape of California native and climate-adaptive plants that can be scaled to park’s regional impact.

Meet Test Plot.

The Puente Hills Youth@Work program is honored to partner with the California-based nonprofit Test Plot on the visioning and long-term care of the Puente Hills Test Plot. Across nearly a dozen sites in Los Angeles County, Test Plot combines community stewardship, experimental restoration design and land-based research to build a land ethic based on cultural care and ecological stewardship, learn more here.

Visit the Puente Hills Test Plot.

The Puente Hills Test Plot is located at the Workman Mill Road Staging Area—a future gateway to the Puente Hills Regional Park.

The Staging Area provides a perfect setting to embark for a trail ride or hike, with opportunities to connect to the Schabarum-Skyline Trail or San Gabriel River trail network. There are several picnic tables located within the Test Plot area. Parking is available on either side of Workman Mill Road—we recommend crossing the road through the pedestrian tunnel.

Apart from special events and volunteer opportunities, the Puente Hills Test Plot and the Workman Mill Road Staging Area adhere to the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation’s standard hours. See below for a seasonal breakdown of when to visit the Puente Hills Test Plot:
